Peer Support Team

The mission of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Peer Support Program is to provide all employees with the opportunity for peer support through times of personal or professional crisis.

Overview

The LAPD Peer Support Program aims to:

  • Provide a readily accessible support network of trained employees willing to be of service to other employees who express a need for assistance in dealing with a personal or professional crisis;

  • Promote trust and appropriate anonymity and confidentiality for employees participating in peer support;

  • Develop the abilities of employees to recognize personal conflicts and an awareness of available resources for self-help and assistance; and

  • Provide and maintain an effective, ongoing Peer Support training process.

One of the most important responsibilities of a Peer Support member is the promotion of trust, anonymity, and confidentiality for employees who seek the assistance.  Therefore, communication between a Peer Support member and an employee is considered privileged by the Department as defined by California’s Assembly Bill 1117, Sections 8669.3 and 8669.7, which outline what constitutes “confidential communication” for Peer Support members and when confidentiality may and may not be breached. If questions or concerns arise, members shall contact the Peer Support Coordinator or the Chief Police Psychologist at Behavioral Science Services for advice and assistance.
